X doesn't see LB as profitable, so hiring a team of coders wouldn't be economical. Making LB open source will absolutely mean people will just make a copycat site.
The issue is that X puts $250 into every tournament, so we're talking $500-1000 in prizes alone, before server costs. LB turns no profit and loses money, so financially it isn't worth anything. It wouldn't be worth buying for $1000, but it also doesn't make sense for X to give it away for less based on his frequent investment.
X doesn't have the time or resources to really improve LB or make big changes. He can do a small bit here or there but we're not going to become everything we want LB to be.
So either things continue at this rate until we ultimately close within the next 3-5 years, or someone with more money than sense buys LB for way above it's actual value. The actual users running tournaments or voting isn't going to change any of this.

So just for Gutz, I've crunched the numbers.
New Accounts in March
177 New Accounts
53 Interacted with the Site
158 Battles
16 Logged on in April
24 Left after first battle
4 Posted on Forums
1 Banned
1 Deleted
6 Have Open Battles
Bare in mind I haven't counted things like someone leaving after spitting 3 battles at one time or multi accounts etc. so these stats are more positive than they should be.
Analysis
29.9% of new accounts had any interaction.
45.2% of accounts that interacted left after just one battle.
69.9% of accounts that interacted never logged in by April.
96.6% of new accounts in March don't have a battle opened.
If you think it's the user's fault that the site is dying, show me numbers to support it. If these numbers were to continue, only 6 battlers will be actively battling a month after joining. If we ran the long term numbers, I'd imagine 1 or 2 at the absolute maximum are battling 6 months later. How can the site possibly sustain if at most we get 1 or 2 long term members per month? We lose more than 1 or 2 long term members per month.

It’s up to us to generate activity amongst ourselves if we’re logging in. I mean, why continue to visit a site on a regular basis and not battle or post in the forums? Seems like a waste of time.
What our activity isn’t going to do in general is encourage new people to join, folks who left to come back, or get anyone on the fence to stay. I try to get battlers from elsewhere to come here and it’s the same complaints today as it was when I was an active mod 5 years ago at probably the lowest of low points. New member recruitment and retention isn’t where it needs to be. I’m sure we as members could find things here or there we can do to help that but there’s only so much an active community can affect it overall.

Or they log on and see a website that is 13 years old with no visual updates and think "Are they for real?".
You've been back for about 3 months now. You were gone for what, about 8 months? That happens with all of us, we all phase in and out, but if new members aren't stepping in to replace those who disappear for 8 months, the site starts dying. Simple maths. The site is too old and broken to retain new members and recruitment is too low for us to rely on the numbers game.

I was referring more to the folks who you can see logged in consistently but basically just lurk there. I never understood the point in that. Go outside if that’s the case.
I think I battled once in 2+ years. I was gone for largely work related reasons but tbh I’m only back because RULE hit me up. I’m here because I’ve enjoyed myself since I’ve been back but I’ve also done this on and off for about 12 years now so I’m not exactly the demographic that needs to be targeted to grow this place or even keep it where it’s at now.

Look at my voting badge and look at yours? Where do you get the notion that I don't vote? Who the hell believes you? Yea, I'm just getting back active, and since then, I've been working on some stuff with Guts including engaging newcomers and programs for the discord, looking into developing a new feature with X and planning a cash tourney with Muggz...and voting almost every single day. Oh, and I actually did drop an audio battle with a beginner who hit me up in the unranked arena. It's not a whole lot, but like I said, I'm just getting back active. What have YOU been doing? I'm not asking that to imply that you haven't been doing anything or to disparage whatever you may have been doing. I'm genuinely asking because it would be great to hear. You act like we're in competition or something. Guts is putting in work. All he's doing is encouraging others to step up. If you really cared about this site, you would do the same instead trying to make it seem like other people are unimportant.

I mean guts is doing a LIL something but still, it doesn't help that he goes against EVERYTHING majority of the site says which is why he has a bad rep.
If things aren't ran HIS way, to him its not a good way. He has no consideration skills. Ita strange that no one can see that. As long as someone does 1 thing for the site, they're doing "all of this work".

You're so sensitive. The example was that you're not really active now, which you could admit yourself easily, but someone could demand you do more or argue that you're not because you've been there and done that.
It's 2020 though, can you just give the "I'm doing shit behind the scenes" schtick a rest? It's cool. You don't need to battle and shit. You don't have to talk AGAIN about the bollocks "plans" that aren't ever going to come to fruition, then you'll blame my "negativity" cause you did fuckall.
"If you really cared for the site you'd battle and vote" is like saying "If you really cared about the planet you wouldn't eat Pringles". If you're too pig headed to see the bigger picture then battling once in 10 years is awesome for you. Nice one, you're saving LB one rookie battle at a time.
My point was that these guys can't take shots at people that have put in a lot of work just because they have fallen away from their interests. it's not Jason's fault LB is shit because he isn't battling, just like it's not mine or yours because we haven't battled 20 times this month.
