Why do people feel the need to dick ride an artist they never listened to
talking the music community in general, majority of people have never heard of xyz artist or weren't following them from the beginning but once they produce a piece that brings the boys to the yard the casuals are on it like stink on shit, but if you were to give them like a" h ow well do you know this artist" quiz from or something they wouldn't be able to get half a question correct... im noticing this more and more esp with all of the lil whatevs coming up what you guys think?

My best answer to this is an age old one...
The people will always love a winner and don’t have time for a loser.
It’s a fact of life. Most people are followers, thats why there are trends. It goes for music, stocks, social media, etc.. The founders and the people who search for the newest upcoming thing are the ones who capitalize either financially or whatever. Those who ride the trends don’t go further than the person next to them. And those who avoid the trends altogether are usually outcasted. In this instance, people want to feel accepted by liking a name or a song that they may have only heard of once or caught a glimpse of to avoid being “that person” who didn’t know.
The word sheeple comes to mind.

Here’s an Unpopular opinion... investment plays a big part too. I’ve invested a lot of listening time into a small Indy rapper or 2 hoping they pop and improve. Trying to support them while they’re small ya know? Then after awhile they give up and stop releasing music. As a fan you feel like you wasted time on someone who wasted their potential. At least by riding a wave you can enjoy it while it’s hot and move on without truthfully feeling anything about the artist. You can mindlessly enjoy mainstream flashes in the pan, but with “UNDA GROUND SPITTA 69” all you got left of his music is a “sort of dope” sound cloud playlist cause they gave up a year in. Just an annoying feeling.

Imagine never being introduced to an artist and then hearing of them.
"You weren't here when he was underground."
Who fucking cares man. If people are faking being fans to try and relate to you they are trying to be your friend at best and they are fake fans at worst.
But most people aren't as into music as a lot of us are, it isn't their fault they have lives outside and only notice something once it gets bigger. A lot of longtime fans are formed this way.
Get off your "I was *blank* before it was popular" bullshit.
