Do you think a person can be a good voter if they are a terrible writer ? Do you think it’s easy to judge things that you can’t do? I know it’s all subjective I’m just wondering what guys think ? Like does someone being skilled automatically make them a good voter? And vice versa

Good point. And no I think some dudes don’t get wordplay, set ups etc. they base it on multis or other things. Writing skill will impact voting ability, if u can’t write to that level, you won’t really be able to understand that level either.

Short answer: no.
Long answer:noooooo.
All jokes aside, i feel a person can be an unbiased and legit voter even if their understanding of writing isn't at a top tier level. You can have people being at the top tier who are immature when voting/quick voting for credits etc.. It's based on the individual as much as it is on said individuals skill set.
Though, more often than not the better the writer, the better voter. As their ability to understand what they're reading & voting on is stronger than someone who can't write as well and is Wowed by the most simplistic bars, wordplay that doesn't work grammatically etc...

At the end of the day, it’s all subjective, what we value in a battle may not be the same as someone else. In their eyes they might think simplistic basic shit is dope, or flow and little to no punches. The problem is do u ban someone from voting because u feel that they don’t value what u value? There is many biases when it comes to voting, as the op pointed out. 1. Someone might be voting just to get points and not even give a shit about the contents, 2. They wouldn’t want to piss off staff or look at titles and automatically pick based off of that. 3. They look at CAPS and automatically vote for someone who has it as opposed to someone who has the superior verse but decides not to use CAPS. For me the only true way to get a sincere vote would be to vote on a battle that hides the participants. That way all they see is the verses and nothing else and vote based on that. Unfortunately that would then eliminate the use of personals. It’s voting is not perfect

The thing about battle rap is it's both a sport and an art form. As a sport, you can judge it based on objective and quantifiable measures, such as use of metaphors, wordplays (and making sure the wordplay makes sense in both meanings or more if it's a triple extendre, etc) and also execution. In the case of text verses, you can even go as far as measuring syllable count in order to get a sense of flow and cadence. Judging it from this perspective is where the voter's own skillset can come into play. As a writer yourself, you can distinguish between which of the two verses would have been more difficult for you to come up with, for example, or which metaphors or wordplay would have taken more imagination to come up with, thereby judging which is more "creative."
But to the degree that battle rap is also an artform, you can also judge it from a purely subjective perspective. You don't have to understand wordplays and metaphors or be a skillful writer yourself to know which verse entertains you more. It also comes down to value as @Malishus said. Someone can understand flow, metaphors and all the technical aspect of writing but not value it as much as how funny a verse was (jokes over bars) or how much they value personals, etc. And they have every right to their own preference. At the end of the day, what makes a good vs a bad voter isn't how skillful the voter is themselves or whether they made the "right pick". It's how well they explain their choice.

Mindless and Student were both great voters. I won't say their writing was terrible, but it never got past a basic level. You have to have a basic level of understanding to be a good voter, but being a great battler requires creativity that is not needed for being a good voter.
